Is it Possible to Babysit Without a Certificate?
Yes, in Ontario, babysitting a child from one family in the child’s home without a certificate or license is possible. Also, a relative providing care for a child does not need one. However, certificate holders have proof that they have had the training to care for younger children from authorized institutions.
Completing a training course not only provides you with proof you can care for children, but also helps you gain the skills and knowledge necessary to do so properly.
What Does the Course Include?
Currently, Coast2Coast offers the Canadian Red Cross Babysitting course in a virtual format (in-class training is available for Private/Group training only). The course includes all the necessary care tips for responsibly caring for younger children, including feeding, changing diapers, dressing, and ensuring their safety. Participants also learn how to manage challenging behaviors, leadership qualities, and the importance of maintaining professional conduct.
Furthermore, First Aid skills play an essential role in this course, ensuring that young babysitters know how to react in any emergency. The course content includes:
- Check, Call (phoning EMS or 911), Care
- Proper glove removal
- Recovery position
- Choking
- CPR in babies and children
- Illnesses and seizures
- Asthma and how to apply an inhaler
- Anaphylaxis and using the EpiPen
- Poisoning
- Insect stings
- Take care of wounds, including minor cuts and scrapes, splinters, nosebleeds, bumps, bruises, etc.
- How to correctly treat bleeding and burns
- How to assist with injuries to the head, neck, and back, or broken bones
Course Duration
There are two types of Canadian Red Cross Virtual Babysitting courses at Coast2Coast – 1 session and 4 sessions:
- 1 Session: participants must complete a 7-8 hour training in one day
- 4 Sessions: participants must complete four separate one-and-a-half-hour sessions along with 30 minutes of homework each day
The WSIB-approved babysitting training is also available as a private in-class course for a group of 12 or more participants. These private courses can take place at any location chosen by the interested parties, and Coast2Coast offers a considerable discount.
Course Requirements
The only requirement of the Babysitting course is that the participants are between 11 and 15 years of age. Registering for any of the upcoming courses is fast and straightforward. Therefore, teens or pre-teens can register, complete it, and get a certificate proving their babysitting skills.
Once a participant completes the training, the Canadian Red Cross will issue a certificate that has no expiry date.
Background Check
When applying for a babysitting position, it is natural that most parents will run a background check before trusting someone for the job. Pre-teens and teens with previous babysitting experience or those with certification stand a better chance of meeting with the approval of the parents wanting someone to care for their children.
