Inner Strength: Empowering Men to Prioritize and Mental Health and Self Care

mental health for men

Mental health encompasses emotional, psychological, and social welfare, impacting our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. It plays a crucial role in coping with stress, building relationships, and making positive decisions. Self-care involves dedicating specific time each day or regularly to prioritize your well-being. It intentionally sets aside your worries and stressors to enhance your mental health.

Our society has a prevailing and widespread stigma surrounding mental health. Men, in particular, encounter an additional layer of stigma when seeking support for their mental well-being.

The belief that asking for help is a sign of weakness, that “real men” should handle their emotions independently, and that discussing topics like anxiety and depression won’t make a difference perpetuates this bias.

Men also face biases within their male circles, where mental health challenges are often seen as a burden, and an expectation exists for men to control and manage their emotions.

A significant challenge in supporting men with their mental health is promoting and creating an environment where they feel comfortable and empowered to discuss their struggles openly. Men are typically conditioned from an early age to suppress their emotions and refrain from expressing them verbally or through actions.

Creating an environment where men can have open and honest conversations about mental health is crucial in empowering them to prioritize their well-being. Breaking down societal stereotypes and expectations that discourage men from expressing their emotions is essential. Encouraging vulnerability, providing resources and support specifically tailored to men’s mental health challenges, and promoting self-care practices that resonate with them can help create a safe space where men feel comfortable seeking help and taking care of their mental health.

Why Don’t Men Talk about Mental Health?

Societal norms and traditional gender expectations contribute to men’s reluctance to discuss or seek support for their mental health issues openly. While gender stereotypes often focus on the adverse effects on women, it is essential to recognize that these stereotypes and expectations can also have harmful consequences for men.

Men who find it difficult to express their emotions openly may face challenges recognizing symptoms of mental health issues within themselves and are less inclined to seek assistance. Men may have a higher tendency to resort to harmful coping mechanisms like substance abuse while being less willing to discuss their mental health concerns with family or friends. On the other hand, men are more likely to seek assistance that caters to their individual preferences, is easily accessible, holds significance, and promotes active engagement.

  • Men tend to rely more on alcohol and drugs as coping mechanisms for managing their depression rather than openly discussing their mental health.
  • Their behaviour and demeanor have changed from their usual personalities, such as mood swings, excessive anger, hostility, or violent behaviour. Additionally, they may struggle to cope with minor challenges and everyday tasks.
  • The individual seems tired and irritable due to noticeably changing sleep and eating habits (e.g. overeating or under-eating)
  • Actively thinking or talking about suicide, they may be experiencing strange or grandiose ideas, delusions, or hallucinations.
  • Some men adopt escapist behaviours, such as immersing themselves in their work, to avoid dealing with their issues.

How to Support Men’s Mental Health

Educate Yourself:

The initial step in offering support to men in their mental health journey is gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges they may face. Engaging with local men’s health organizations can be a valuable source of knowledge and further enhance your awareness.

Ask how you can help:

Discussing mental health can be difficult for anyone, so simply asking how you can provide support can make a significant difference. Taking this step shows that you are willing to listen and offer assistance.

Be a good listener:

Opening up about mental health requires great courage. By actively listening, you provide a safe space for individuals to share and process their challenges.

Avoid judgment & blame:

Passing judgment or placing blame can worsen someone’s struggles and discourage them from seeking help. Instead, offer empathy and compassion as the most effective forms of support.

Guide them to appropriate resources:

You can offer guidance by directing them to resources such as local support groups, counselors, or therapists. While you may not determine the severity of their condition, ensure their safety and awareness of available options.

Offer encouragement:

Let the person know that their experiences are valid and that they are not alone.

Take care of yourself:

Prioritizing your physical and emotional well-being is essential before supporting others with mental health challenges. Maintaining your health can provide more effective support in the long run.

The Power of Opening up about Mental Health

Due to societal conditioning, men often refrain from seeking help, as they have been socialized to avoid displaying any signs of weakness and have been taught to tough it out when it comes to mental health challenges. This mindset increases the likelihood of men dismissing significant symptoms as mere indifference or a temporary low mood. In severe cases, they may resort to self-medication through substance abuse, using drugs and alcohol as coping mechanisms.

It is crucial to normalize open discussions about men’s mental health and establish safe environments where they can freely express their emotions without fear of judgment. By creating these supportive spaces, we can dismantle the stigma surrounding men’s feelings, ultimately reducing the number of men who silently endure their struggles.

A positive step towards fostering these conversations is for men to initiate discussions with trusted primary care physicians. More primary care physicians are proactively inquiring about men’s emotional well-being to encourage such dialogues.

Creating Mental Health-Safe Spaces

Training churches and barbers to encourage conversations on mental health can help create mental health awareness. These supportive environments provide a relaxed atmosphere where men can freely share their thoughts and feelings with individuals they have established trust and familiarity with. This form of engagement with mental health, separate from medical settings, holds significant importance, especially within communities of colour. These communities often harbor skepticism towards mental health treatment, making creating safe spaces even more valuable.

However, there are instances where the foundation of a safe space begins within the confines of one’s own home. In such cases, it becomes the responsibility of a man’s loved ones to inquire about his emotional well-being proactively and suggest seeking help if there are indications of an ongoing problem.

Conclusion

Embracing inner strength and empowering men to prioritize their mental health and self-care is crucial for fostering overall well-being. By challenging societal norms and stereotypes, we can establish a supportive environment that encourages men to freely express their emotions and seek help without fear of judgment or weakness. Creating safe spaces where men feel comfortable sharing their feelings is essential in dismantling the stigma surrounding men and their mental health struggles. By normalizing these conversations, we can reduce the number of men suffering in silence and ensure they receive the support they truly deserve.

Moreover, the involvement of loved ones plays a significant role in promoting men’s mental well-being. Family and friends can provide invaluable support by actively engaging with men’s emotions, asking about their feelings, and recommending professional help when needed. Empowering men to prioritize self-care is equally vital. Encouraging healthy coping mechanisms such as exercise, mindfulness, and engaging in hobbies helps men develop resilience and emotional balance. By recognizing that self-care is not a sign of weakness but an essential aspect of overall well-being, men can cultivate their inner strength and regain control over their mental health.

Ultimately, we can foster a more inclusive and compassionate society by embracing inner strength and empowering men to prioritize their mental health and self-care. Through collective efforts, we can break free from the limitations imposed by gender expectations and create a future where men’s mental health receives the attention and support it genuinely deserves.
