Toronto’s Heroes-in-Training: A Recap of Our 4th Annual “Train the Next Hero!” Workshop
At Coast2Coast First Aid & Aquatics, we’re passionate about empowering communities with the life-saving skills they need to make a difference. Our annual “Train the Next Hero!” workshop is a testament to this commitment. On August 11, 2024, Mel Lastman Square transformed into a bustling hub of heroism as we hosted the fourth installment of this beloved event.
A Day of Empowerment and Fun
The workshop featured a variety of interactive stations, each meticulously designed to equip participants with the knowledge and confidence to respond effectively in emergency situations, whether at home, in school, or within the broader community. These stations focused on practical, life-saving skills that can make a critical difference before professional medical or emergency services arrive.
Participants were guided through essential training sessions that covered CPR, first aid response, and techniques to manage various incidents. Each training module included live demonstrations by experienced instructors, ensuring that participants could observe the correct procedures firsthand. Following these demonstrations, participants were given the opportunity to practice these life-saving techniques under the supervision of the trainers. This hands-on approach allowed everyone to gain practical experience and reinforced their ability to act swiftly and confidently in real-life emergencies.
Moreover, the workshop encouraged an interactive learning environment where participants could ask questions, clarify doubts, and receive personalized guidance on each aspect of the training. This comprehensive and immersive experience ensured that everyone left the workshop not only with enhanced skills but also with the assurance that they could effectively handle emergencies, protect their loved ones, and contribute to the safety of their community. Additionally, participants received a participation certificate upon successfully completing all the training provided at each station.
CPR Basics
Participants were introduced to the essential techniques for performing CPR on adults and children, emphasizing the critical differences between the two. Many were surprised to learn how CPR techniques must be adjusted depending on the age of the victim, with chest compressions being gentler and breaths more carefully administered for children. The importance of knowing CPR was highlighted, as it can significantly increase the chances of survival in cardiac arrest situations. One of the key takeaways was understanding how effective early CPR can be in maintaining blood flow to vital organs until professional medical help arrives. Additionally, participants were intrigued to discover that timely CPR can double or even triple the chances of survival in some cases.

Heart Attack, Stroke, and Drug Overdose
Participants gained valuable insights into recognizing signs and symptoms and responding to life-threatening conditions like heart attacks, strokes, and drug overdoses. They learned about the distinct warning signs for each condition, including the fact that symptoms of a heart attack can vary significantly between men and women. Many were surprised to discover how some symptoms, particularly in women, can be subtle and easily dismissed, potentially delaying critical treatment.
The workshop also covered first aid techniques for heart attacks, cardiac arrest, and opioid overdoses. Participants were informed about the practical use of over-the-counter medications and were introduced to naloxone—a nasal spray or injectable solution used to reverse opioid overdoses. They were particularly surprised to learn that naloxone is accessible at no cost through participating community health organizations and pharmacies, with no OHIP or ID required. For those seeking to obtain naloxone, finding a nearby pharmacy is simple and free. This newfound knowledge empowered participants with practical tools and resources to respond effectively in emergencies involving drug overdoses.
Choking Response
At the Choking Response Booth, participants learned the critical skill of managing choking emergencies, focusing on the swift and correct use of abdominal thrusts and back blows. Through live demonstrations and hands-on practice, attendees were taught how to recognize choking signs and execute the maneuver effectively on both adults and children.
The station also briefly covered alternative techniques for different scenarios, such as choking in children or situations where abdominal thrusts might not be feasible. This practical, engaging session left participants confident in their ability to respond calmly and effectively to choking emergencies.
Beyond the Classroom
The workshop wasn’t just about learning; it was also about having fun! A variety of activities, including face painting, coloring, and a photo booth, kept attendees of all ages entertained while they learned life-saving skills.
Our Community Partners and Their Impact
We were fortunate to have several esteemed NGOs present, each contributing their expertise to enrich the workshop experience. Their participation was instrumental in providing additional educational resources and support to the attendees.
Emergency Preparedness:
One of the non-profits who joined us at Train the Next Hero was The Canadian Red Cross. They shared valuable insights and resource materials on how to prepare for and respond to various emergencies.
Fire Safety:
The Toronto Fire Department was also present to engage with participants about fire prevention and safety. Their focus was on recruitment, offering insights into career opportunities and how individuals can contribute to fire safety efforts. They also emphasized the importance of being prepared and aware of fire risks.
Blood Donation Awareness:
Canadian Blood Services promoted the importance of blood donation and encouraged participants to consider becoming regular donors. The booth highlighted how a simple act of giving blood can make a heroic difference in someone’s life.

A Legacy of Empowerment
The “Train the Next Hero!” workshop has become an annual tradition, reflecting our commitment to community safety. By providing free access to life-saving skills, we empower individuals to make a positive difference in their communities.
Why Coast2Coast Hosts Train the Next Hero
Coast2Coast is dedicated to empowering the community with essential life-saving skills through our annual “Train the Next Hero” workshop. The decision to host this event stems from the tragic Yonge Street van attack in 2018, which highlighted the urgent need for public readiness and first aid knowledge. This devastating incident highlights the critical importance of equipping individuals with the skills to respond effectively in emergencies, potentially saving lives before professional medical help arrives.
The workshop is a proactive response to this need, ensuring that community members are not merely bystanders but active participants in emergency preparedness. By providing practical training in CPR, first aid, and other life-saving techniques, Coast2Coast aims to foster a community capable of handling crises with confidence and competence. We committed to this cause, reinforcing our role in community safety and resilience through these annual events.
The Impact of Train the Next Hero
The workshop’s impact is immeasurable. Participants left with the confidence to respond effectively in emergency situations, potentially saving lives. The event also fostered a sense of community and preparedness, inspiring others to take action and become heroes in their own right.
As the fourth annual “Train the Next Hero!” workshop concludes, we look forward to continuing our mission of empowering communities and making a lasting impact.
