This 8-hour basic/emergency first aid course covers the basics of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, AED use, and primary care for life-threatening emergencies. It is our basic first aid option, and it suits personal knowledge or basic workplace requirements.
Our Basic/Emergency First Aid and CPR/AED is an 8-hour course offering an overview of first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills for the workplace or home. The course covers skills needed to recognize, prevent, and respond to circulation emergencies for adults (CPR level A or C). Other topics include airway and breathing emergencies, as well as the prevention of disease transmission. Classroom time is practical training on manikins and AED trainers rather than lecture.

Our Intermediate/Standard First Aid and CPR/AED is a 16-hour course offering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills for those who need training for work requirements, or who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies at home. The course covers a variety of topics from basic (circulation and breathing emergencies, and prevention of disease transmission), to in-depth (sudden medical emergencies and injuries to the head and/or spine).

Difference Between Basic/Emergency and Intermediate/Standard First Aid
Basic/Emergency First Aid and cpr is a one-day, 8-hour course focused on essential skills: CPR training, AED use, choking, severe bleeding, and shock.
Intermediate/Standard First Aid (sometimes called Intermediate First Aid) is a 16-hour course over two days or split between online and in-class sessions. It covers everything in Basic/Emergency plus head and spine injuries, broken bones, sudden medical emergencies, poisons, and environmental emergencies.
Both start with the same foundation, but Intermediate First Aid covers a wider range of topics, making it the standard for most workplaces.
Is Intermediate First Aid the Same as Standard First Aid?
Yes. Intermediate First Aid and Standard First Aid courses are the same. Job postings and certificates may use either name, but both mean you’re qualified in first aid and CPR at this higher level.
When you see Intermediate/Standard First Aid & CPR/AED, it’s the comprehensive course you need.
Which First Aid Course Do I Need for My Job?
Always ask your employer first — they set the requirements.
In Ontario, Regulation 1101 is the guide:
- 5 or fewer workers: Basic/Emergency First Aid
- More than 5 workers: Intermediate/Standard First Aid
Most workplaces require Intermediate First Aid certification.
All our first aid courses are approved by WSIB (Ontario), Occupational Health & Safety (Alberta), and WCB (Nova Scotia).
CPR Levels: What’s the Difference Between CPR Level A and CPR C?
- CPR Level A: Covers adults only.
- CPR C: Covers adults, children, and infants, and includes two-rescuer technique. Most job postings request CPR C with first aid courses and CPR certification.
Can I Learn CPR Training Online?
You can do the theory portion online, but WSIB requires hands-on skills demonstration for certification.
Online Blended CPR training lets you complete theory at home, then do a shorter in-class session for hands-on practice — working on manikins and AED trainers.
How Long Is the Intermediate/Standard First Aid Course?
Always 16 hours:
- In-Class: Two full days, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
- Online Blended: 8 hours online + 8 hours in-class.
Both formats require 100% attendance and a minimum of 75% on the multiple choice test.
What Will I Practise in Class?
The class is hands-on: scene assessment, CPR training on manikins, AED use, choking response, and using an epinephrine auto-injector.
Wound care includes heavy bleeding, burns, sprains, and fractures.
Do I Need a Medical Background? How Often Do I Recertify?
No experience required. Most participants are office staff, teachers, childcare, or social service workers.
Your first aid and CPR certificate is valid for three years. Recertify before expiry, or you’ll need to retake the entire course.
