First Aid Instructor
Recertification Course
The Canadian Red Cross First Aid Instructor Development Recertification Course offers instructors the opportunity to re-certify their certificate. This course provides an interactive learning experience where candidates are given the opportunity to practice presentation and training techniques in a small-group setting. They will have a chance to update their skills and methods and discuss new program updates.
Each discipline must be recertified separately. These disciplines include:
- First Aid & CPR (6 hours)
- Professional Responder – FR/EMR/BLS (7 hours)
Instructor Pathway
1. Check Prerequisites
Prerequisites:
Valid Canadian Red Cross First Aid Instructor certification.
Proof that the instructor taught at least three Canadian Red Cross First Aid courses while their Instructor Certificate was valid. One of these must have been the highest level of certification within the discipline they wish to recertify (e.g. Standard First Aid as a First Aid instructor). Courses taught in combination (such as Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C) do not count as two separate courses.
Instructor must have taught at least one Standard First Aid, Standard Child Care First Aid or Marine Basic First Aid course since earning their Instructor certification.
2. Classroom Component
Course Length:
First Aid/CPR: 6 hours
FR/EMR/BLS: 7 hours
Learn the Fundamentals of Instruction during this component.
Successfully complete selected discipline(s):
- First Aid & CPR
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- First Responder (FR)
- Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
If you wish to recertify more than one discipline, you must enroll in separate Instructor Recertification courses.
3. Recertification
Earn a digital copy of your Instructor Certification.
- Valid for 3 years

Requirements:
- A current CRC First Aid Program Instructor certification,
- Have taught a minimum of three Canadian Red Cross First Aid Program courses during the three-year certification period
- One course must have been taught in each Instructor designation seeking recertification (to the highest level of certification with each program area, recertification courses qualify).Attention: there may be additional requirements set by local legislators. Please check legislation in your area for additional requirementsCourses which were taught in combination (example: Standard First Aid and CPR C) do not count as separate courses for the purpose of recertification prerequisites
Teaching Ability:
- Understand how people learn
- Effectively communicate information to a small group
- Accept and give appropriate feedback
- Teach and evaluate participants according to established standards
- Identify how to include all participants in the course
Certification:
Certifications are three years in length
