Our instructor development program is designed to help you master the art of teaching and facilitating, both individually and in group activities. The candidate can begin the Fundamentals of Instruction after completing the course’s prerequisites. In this section, candidates must complete 8 hours of online training. The knowledge they acquire from the material will be integrated into a 14.5-hour (2-day) in-class component. After the Fundamentals of Instruction component is completed, they can then attend the Discipline-Specific Classroom component which requires two more days of training in class. Lastly, to gain their Instructor Certificate, participants will have the opportunity to try out their teaching skills by leading peer teaching sessions.
You’ll receive an e-certificate valid for 3 years upon completion of the course. The courses that can be taught by the certified instructors include basic first aid, more advanced first aid, marine basic first aid, emergency child care first aid, standard child care first aid, and CPR instruction. The program allows candidates to get real teaching experience by mentoring in a dynamic classroom environment. After completing the requirements, their certification will be processed.
All certification expires and needs to be renewed every three years. We will verify the candidate’s completion of the pathway components and courses they wish to teach, in accordance with their expertise. Hamilton Instructor Development Transfer Course
Your prior experience can help you qualify for the Instructor Development Transfer course as per the Canadian Red Cross Standards. Coast2Coast’s First Aid Instructor Transfer course in Hamilton qualifies students to become instructors of Red Cross safety courses such as CPR, Emergency First Aid, Standard First Aid, Child Care First Aid, and Marine Basic First Aid.
With prior expertise, candidates may qualify for the Instructor Development Program in the following two categories:
- If they are an instructor approved with another First Aid agency
- If they are a Canadian Red Cross Water Safety Instructor/Instructor Trainer or an educator at either the elementary or secondary level
Depending on the category the candidate fits in, their training will follow one of these paths:
- For those who fit into the first category, candidates will apply what they’ve learned in prior First Aid training to the Red Cross’s program. Before earning their Instructor certification with Red Cross, they will need to check prerequisites and have their skills evaluated. They will then move on to complete the Fundamentals of Instruction component which has an online and in-class component. Once this component is complete, they may skip the Discipline-Specific component. After that, they’ll participate in a short in-class Teaching Experience.
- However, those who fall into category 2 will get to skip the Fundamentals of Instruction component and go straight into the Discipline-Specific component. This component lasts up to 14.5 hours. The candidate must successfully complete a skills evaluation to begin this course pathway. Lastly, the candidate will complete a teaching experience component where they will practice peer teaching sessions.

Hamilton Instructor Development Recertification Course

The Instructor Development Recertification Course in Hamilton is designed for current Red Cross instructors who wish to renew their instructor certification to continue teaching. This course will provide candidates with the opportunity to complete the Instructor Recertification Hub.
This training course covers the essential topics of teaching, supervision, and evaluation. It also includes individual and group tasks, practice teaching, injury prevention concepts, inclusion, and progressive learning. With this comprehensive coverage, you will be prepared to enter the field or take your career to the next level.
The first step to take in our Instructor Recertification course is the HUB component. This training lasts for 4 hours, and can be done either online or in person. The HUB is a mandatory component of the curriculum that must be completed every three years. Once the candidate has successfully completed the HUB, they may move on to the Discipline-Specific component. Candidates can recertify in three disciplines. This 4-hour component may be done virtually or in-class. Candidates must separately recertify in any of the three disciplines including:
- First Aid & CPR (4 hours)
- Professional Responder (4 hours)
- Wilderness (4 hours)
