More than 300 thousand people die because of cardiac arrest every year. The risk of heart disease is higher in senior citizens. 70% of adults above the age of 60 have some kind of cardiac problem in their lifetimes. There are many different types of health issues that can be the cause of cardiac arrest as well as other social factors that can lead to this situation of life or death. Knowing CPR can save lives.
If people are properly trained, knowing CPR can help save lives. Trained individuals would be ready to immediately take action when required. Here are some reasons why knowing CPR is helpful:
CPR Will Save Lives
Did you know that a person’s brain and organs can die within a few minutes of cardiac arrest? It only takes four to six minutes for brain death once the heart stops pumping blood. By performing CPR on a person suffering from cardiac arrest, you help pump blood and oxygen to vital organs, creating a much better chance of survival for that person. If you begin CPR within two minutes of cardiac arrest, the person’s chances of survival will double.
CPR Training is Beneficial for Everyone
Over 90% of people die each year due to cardiac arrest because they are unable to get immediate help. By learning CPR, we can improve the chance of survival in our communities. Not only do adults suffer from cardiac arrest, but younger individuals have an increased risk of cardiac arrest as well. Why is this? It is because of the sedentary lifestyle and poor dietary habits our youth has today. Many children spend too much time indoors in front of electronics rather than living an active lifestyle. With that being said, people of all age groups should know how to perform CPR.
Your Family or Friends May Need It
Typically, when you get CPR training, you assume you will use your training on a stranger. However, there is a chance that someone in your family or workplace may suffer from cardiac arrest. If this happens, you have the opportunity to save a loved one because you will know how to perform CPR immediately. 70% of the time, cardiac arrest happens at home and these people are unable to reach a hospital. You will be grateful learning these life saving skills in the case of an emergency, allowing you to save the life of someone you love and care for.
It Can Happen to Anyone
Most of the time, cardiac arrest does not happen to people who are suffering from chronic heart conditions. Traumatic accidents, choking, electric shock and drowning are all possible causes of cardiac arrest. There are some additional health conditions that can also lead to cardiac arrest such as:
- Infections
- Heart disease
- Diabetes
- Allergic reactions
- Sudden cardiac arrest because of stress or depression
Do Not Shy Away
Many bystanders get too nervous to perform CPR on a stranger, but getting CPR training will give you the confidence and allow you to make the right decision so you can perform it. Even if you are not properly trained, it is better to try to help if you see someone in need. There are many website and videos where you can learn to perform CPR. Please be sure to call 911 before you start CPR.
