Five Canadian Red Cross courses for people who give care before the ambulance
arrives — First Responder in four days, Emergency Medical Responder in eight, plus the
upgrade and renewal routes.
Where you start depends on what you already hold. First Responder needs no certificate at all.
The full EMR program is the level below paramedic. And if you are already a First Responder,
the upgrade reaches EMR in half the days.
⚠Check the prerequisite first: First Responder asks for nothing. The full
EMR course needs a current Intermediate/Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C
certificate; the upgrade needs a valid FR certificate.

Course content
Twenty topics in four groups: foundations of the responder role, medical emergencies, trauma from bleeding through to head and spinal injuries, and special situations such as pregnancy, crisis intervention and multiple-casualty incidents. See the full topic list.

CPR Level C covers adult, child and infant. No FR certificate needed on this route.

The Professional Responder Program is five Canadian Red Cross courses for people who give care before an ambulance arrives. It covers First Responder, Emergency Medical Responder, the EMR upgrade, and a recertification for each level.
Which responder course should I take first?
Start with First Responder — it has no prerequisite and runs four days. The full Red Cross EMR course asks for a current Intermediate/Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certificate, so book that first if you do not hold one.
How long is each course, and what does it take to pass?
First Responder is 40 hours over four days and EMR is 80 hours over eight, with the three shorter routes running 20 to 40 hours. All five ask for 100% attendance, 75% on the knowledge test and a skills demonstration.
How long is a Red Cross EMR or First Responder certificate valid?
Every Red Cross EMR and First Responder certificate is valid for three years. Renew while yours is still in date — once it lapses the recertification route closes and you retake the full course.
What is the difference between First Responder and EMR?
First Responder covers 20 topics in four days; the Red Cross EMR course covers 24 in eight. EMR sits directly below paramedic and adds pharmacology, transportation and workplace care. Both are mapped to the National Occupational Competency Profiles.
What standards is the training built on?
Our responder training follows the National Occupational Competency Profiles. That is the Paramedic Association of Canada framework defining the core competencies for pre-hospital care, with Canadian Red Cross guidance on top of it.
Does a responder certificate meet WSIB Regulation 1101?
No — Regulation 1101 asks for a first aid certification, so book Intermediate/Standard First Aid and CPR Level C for workplace compliance. We are a WSIB-approved training provider, but these are professional credentials rather than the workplace certificate the regulation names. See our first aid and CPR courses.
What should I wear, and when does my certificate arrive?
Wear comfortable clothing you can kneel and move in. Most of both programs is practical work on the floor with backboards, stretchers and manikins. Your digital certificate is issued within 48 hours of a successful skills evaluation.
