Professional Responder Program

The Professional Responder Program is five Canadian Red Cross courses for people who give care before an ambulance arrives. It covers First Responder, Emergency Medical Responder, the EMR upgrade, and a recertification for each level.

Start with First Responder — it has no prerequisite and runs four days. The full Red Cross EMR course asks for a current Intermediate/Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certificate, so book that first if you do not hold one.

First Responder is 40 hours over four days and EMR is 80 hours over eight, with the three shorter routes running 20 to 40 hours. All five ask for 100% attendance, 75% on the knowledge test and a skills demonstration.

Every Red Cross EMR and First Responder certificate is valid for three years. Renew while yours is still in date — once it lapses the recertification route closes and you retake the full course.

First Responder covers 20 topics in four days; the Red Cross EMR course covers 24 in eight. EMR sits directly below paramedic and adds pharmacology, transportation and workplace care. Both are mapped to the National Occupational Competency Profiles.

Our responder training follows the National Occupational Competency Profiles. That is the Paramedic Association of Canada framework defining the core competencies for pre-hospital care, with Canadian Red Cross guidance on top of it.

No — Regulation 1101 asks for a first aid certification, so book Intermediate/Standard First Aid and CPR Level C for workplace compliance. Wear comfortable clothing you can kneel and move in. Most of both programs is practical work on the floor with backboards, stretchers and manikins. Your digital certificate is issued within 48 hours of a successful skills evaluation.
