BLS Certification and Recertification
After completing your Basic Life Support training course, you will receive an official, WSIB approved certificate within 5-10 business days. The BLS certificate is only valid for one year through the Canadian Red Cross. This means you must update your certificate annually. Coast2Coast does not offer a Basic Life Support Recertification training through the Canadian Red Cross, but we do offer Recertification through our Heart & Stroke BLS program.
If you wish to earn a Red Cross certification, click on the “Renew Your Basic Life Support (HCP)” option from the dropdown above if you have completed your BLS training before. With this option, you can take the full BLS course at a discounted rate! All you need to do is bring a copy of your most recent BLS certificate with you to your training. If your certificate has already expired, you may still select the renewal option. Failure to provide this certificate will require you to pay the remaining balance for the full course.
Regardless if you choose the full BLS course or the renewal option, you will receive a WSIB approved Canadian Red Cross certificate, which is valid for one year.
BLS Course Content
Since the Basic Life Support course is meant for healthcare providers, the material taught in this course will teach students how care for patients of cardiac or respiratory arrest. You can expect to learn basic life support skills, glove removal, primary assessment, special considerations, airway obstruction, assisted ventilation, trauma, hypothermia, opioid overdose, anaphylaxis, the six rights of medication, high-performance CPR for adults, children and infants, post-cardiac arrest care, choking for adults, children and infants, high-performance team communication and post-even debrief.
As a healthcare professional, you will also learn skills required in a fast-paced environment such as teamwork and effective communication. It is important to understand that you must be a team player in the healthcare field. Your patients rely on you to work together to save their life. In addition to teamwork and communication, students will learn respect, designated roles and how to debrief your team after a call or code.
This is a high-intensity training that will provide you the confidence needed to save a life. If you do not feel comfortable with your current CPR skills, we recommend that you complete a CPR/AED Level C training first. This course will teach you how to perform CPR and use an AED on adults, children and infants.

BLS is not the same as CPR level C training. CPR level C is a training we recommend to students who are not in healthcare. This course provides students a basic understanding of how to provide CPR and use an AED on adults, children and infants. Our CPR level C training course also includes information on internal and external bleeding, recovery position and more!
Basic Life Support is meant for healthcare professionals specifically, though. This course will provide upcoming or existing healthcare professionals the knowledge needed to save a life. Training is more intense than the CPR level C course and students are expected to understand the material more thoroughly to pass.
No. Basic Life Support and CPR provide students with two completely different certificates. For one, Basic Life Support is only valid for one year whereas CPR is valid for three years. Each of these courses teach students different skills. The Basic Life Support training goes more in-depth on certain aspects of training compared to the normal CPR course.
